How a point travels

The loop runs itself. The limits are yours to set.

Earning, levelling and the badge that follows are all automatic. What is deliberately not automatic is how much anyone can earn, and that is the half worth ten minutes before you launch.

  1. Somebody does something

    Posts, comments, joins a group, finishes their profile. Eight of these work on a plain WordPress site and thirteen more arrive with BuddyPress.

  2. It becomes a row

    Every award is written to a ledger and the running total is updated in the same transaction, so the number on a profile always matches the history behind it.

  3. The level looks after itself

    Crossing a threshold promotes the member and can hand them a badge, join them to a group or change their WordPress role, without you watching for it.

  4. They find out immediately

    A toast and a small celebration, right where they were standing. The reward has to arrive while the action still feels connected to it.

Three dials to turn first

Generous defaults, on purpose

Caps start switched off
Cooldown, daily cap and weekly cap all ship at zero, which means unlimited. Two exceptions are set for you: receiving a comment tops out at ten a day, and leaving one has a minute between them. Everything else is yours to decide.
Nobody is excluded yet
The excluded users and roles lists are empty on a fresh install, so your own account earns points while you are testing. Add your admins before you announce it.
Decay is off
Points last forever unless you turn expiry on and choose a window. That is the right default, and it is worth knowing it is a decision you have not made rather than one made for you.

Two answers you will want

At a few thousand members

The leaderboard holds up. It asks for at most a hundred rows, sits behind a short cache and a snapshot rebuilt every five minutes, and the all-time board reads running totals rather than scanning the history. It was built by someone who had already met a large site.

But it does not page. A hundred rows is the ceiling on every surface. Someone in two hundredth place can see their own rank, and cannot scroll to find themselves.

And only one thing takes points back. A refunded WooCommerce order reverses its award. Deleting a comment does not, so points earned stay earned.

The importer reads the old plugin's own ledger and checks its totals before anything is written.

    Leave the old plugin's data in the database. The importer reads the GamiPress, myCred or BadgeOS tables directly.

    Preview the import

    Run Preview (dry run). It compares what would import with the old plugin's own balances and writes nothing.

Before you switch on points and badges

Is WB Gamification really free?
Yes. There is no paid tier and no add-on to buy. Updates arrive through a key bundled with the plugin, so you never type one.
Do I need BuddyPress?
No. It works on plain WordPress. With BuddyPress active you also get profile ranks, an Achievements tab, level badges in the member directory and activity posts.
Which BuddyPress actions earn points?
Fourteen, including activity updates, comments, friendships, joining or creating groups, profile completion, reactions, polls, media uploads and private messages. Each default is editable.
How is it different from GamiPress?
The free GamiPress plugin covers points, achievements and ranks. Leaderboards and notifications are add-ons from $49 a site (checked September 17, 2026). WB Gamification includes both, plus streaks, leagues and a rewards store.
Can I move from GamiPress, myCred or BadgeOS?
Yes. The importer brings points, badges or achievements and ranks. Preview first: it checks totals against the old plugin without writing. Decimal myCred balances are rounded and flagged.
Can members game the system?
Each action can have a cooldown, a daily cap and a weekly cap, and you can exclude accounts from earning. By default, members are not told when a cap blocks an award.
Will it slow down a large community?
Awards queue through Action Scheduler, and leaderboards read a snapshot refreshed every five minutes. Past 10,000 active members, run Redis or Memcached and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.5.
Can members keep their rank private?
Yes. Members can hide their rank and opt out of the leaderboard. WordPress privacy tools export or erase their gamification data.
