Media gallery plugin

A gallery your members fill, not one you update alone.

Most gallery plugins are built for the one person who curates. This one is built for the hundred who contribute: they upload photos, video and audio from the front end, and visitors browse a filterable grid and open everything in a lightbox.

WHAT A MODERN GALLERY NEEDS

Six things to check before you pick a gallery plugin

Layouts and a lightbox are the easy part. These six decide whether a gallery still works once hundreds of people contribute.

Who can add media

If only admins upload, the gallery grows as fast as your spare time. Front-end uploads let members do the adding.

Front-end uploads, free

Layouts that suit the photos

Square crops suit product shots. Justified rows keep each photo's proportions. A list suits audio and long captions.

Finding things later

Tags, categories, albums and search turn a pile of uploads into something visitors can browse.

Tags, albums, full-text search

Privacy per item

Not every photo is for the public. Each upload needs its own setting, checked again when the file is served.

9 privacy levels, signed links

A gate for open uploads

Letting members upload needs somewhere to review what arrives: a queue, member reports and, if you want them, automated checks.

Queue, reports, OpenAI checks

A reason to come back

Reactions, comments and follows tell contributors someone saw their work. That is what keeps uploads coming.

What happens to one photo a member adds

A curated gallery only has to look good. A gallery other people fill has to hold up when someone uploads the wrong thing, twice.

  1. Upload

A member drops a file in on the front end. Seven checks run before anything is saved.

Is there a file at all
An empty pick is refused with a message that says to try again, not a silent failure.
    Is the type allowed
Eight types out of the box: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, MP4, WebM, MP3 and OGG. You edit the list. PDF is refused outright, because documents are a Pro feature with their own home.
Is it under the size cap
The refusal names the limit in MB, so the member knows what to do next rather than guessing.
Have we seen this file before
Every upload is hashed. By default a duplicate still uploads and the member is told; you can switch that to refusing it outright, or to saying nothing.
    Is the extension safe
Blocked extensions are refused, and so is a blocked one hidden in the middle, the photo.php.jpg trick.
Is the photo turned the right way, and stripped
Phone rotation is applied to the file itself, then location data is removed. Both on by default.
Has this member run out of room
The last gate checks the optional per-member storage limit in Settings > General. It is unlimited unless you set one.
  2. Moderate

On a fresh install the upload is live the moment it passes. That is a choice, and it is the one you will want to think about first.

    Nothing waits by default
Members publish immediately. Holding every upload for approval is a filter a developer adds, not a checkbox, so plan for it before you open uploads to the public.
    The queue is already there
Three tabs, AI-flagged, Pending and Rejected, with single and bulk approve or reject, and a count on the menu so nothing waits unnoticed.
    Members fill it for you
Three reports hide an item until someone reviews it. Change the number, or set it to zero to stop auto-hiding.
A model can take the first pass
Optional checks flag uploads before a person sees them. Off by default, and capped at $10 of spend a month until you say otherwise.
  3. Display

Once it is live, the same item renders anywhere you put a grid, in the theme you already run.

    Three layouts, free
Square crops, justified rows that keep each photo’s proportions, or a list for audio and long captions. One site-wide default, overridable for a single grid.
    Nine blocks and fourteen shortcodes
Grids, upload forms, players, album viewers and member grids, placed on any page.
    One lightbox everywhere
The explore feed, a Media Grid block and BuddyPress activity all open the same full-screen view, with reactions and comments beside the file.
Privacy checked again on the way out
The setting on the item is re-checked when the file is served, and anything not public goes through a signed link rather than a guessable URL.

Lightbox

Every item opens full screen, with its conversation beside it

Click a thumbnail and the item opens over the page. Reactions, favourite, share and comments sit next to the photo. Arrows move through the gallery without a reload.

What the free gallery includes

Everything below ships in the free plugin unless it is marked Pro.

Layouts and screens from a working gallery

Pinterest layout (Pro): each card keeps the photo's shape and shows its title, description, likes and comments.

Dribbble layout (Pro): a three-column grid with tag filters above and the uploader under each shot.

The upload page: drop files in, choose who can see them, then add a title and description.

Alpine Mountain Sunrise on its own page, with reaction counts, favourite, share and 111 views.

A member profile: media, followers and following counts above a grid members can search and filter by tag.

The gallery is free. Pro adds layouts and storage.

Pay once and own it forever, or pick the annual plan. All features included in every plan, no hidden add-ons.

Gallery questions, answered

Can visitors upload without an account?
No. Uploading needs a logged-in account with the upload capability, which you grant per role. Visitors without an account can still browse public media.
Can I bring in galleries from Envira, FooGallery or NextGEN?
No. MediaVerse has no importer for those plugins. It can run beside them, because it uses its own tables, pages and upload folder.
Which layouts are free?
A square grid, justified rows that keep each photo's proportions, and a list. The Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr and Dribbble layouts need Pro.
Can I approve uploads before they appear?
The queue is there, with single and bulk approve or reject, but nothing waits in it by default: members publish straight away. Three reports hide an item for review, optional AI checks can flag uploads first, and holding every upload for approval is a filter a developer adds rather than a setting.
Does it show EXIF camera data?
No. MediaVerse removes GPS location from photos on upload by default and does not display camera settings. Envira and FooGallery both list EXIF display.
Can I sell prints or run client proofing?
No. Nothing in MediaVerse or Pro sells media or handles proofing. A portfolio plugin such as NextGEN Gallery is the better fit for that work.
Will a large library slow my site?
Media lives in 23 dedicated tables, not wp_posts, so it never mixes with your posts and pages. Your hosting still sets the overall limits.
Do I need BuddyPress?
No. MediaVerse has its own upload page, explore feed, profiles and messages. BuddyPress adds media tabs to profiles and groups when it is active.

The gallery, the uploads and the moderation queue are free, on unlimited sites.
