BuddyPress media

Photos and video where BuddyPress lives.

Up to six files per activity post, Media and Albums tabs on profiles and groups, and a Pro importer for rtMedia sites.

Inside BuddyPress

Four places media shows up

Activate BuddyPress and these appear on their own. The integration is in the free plugin, not behind a licence.

  • A BuddyPress activity stream with an update carrying an image, plus comment and favourite actions

    Activity stream

Members attach media to an update, up to six items per post. Comments on the media and on the activity stay in step.

  • An activity post showing several attached images as a grid inside the stream

    More than one file

Several files in one post render as a grid in the stream, and each one keeps its own privacy and page.

  • A member profile with Media and Albums tabs and an upload button above a grid of uploads

    Profile tabs

Media and Albums tabs on the profile, with an upload button in place. Documents get their own sub-tab.

  • A BuddyPress group with a Media tab in its navigation and a grid of group uploads

    Group tabs

The same tabs inside a group, so what a group shares stays with the group.

Privacy follows BuddyPress: an item set to friends or to a group is checked against that membership on every view. Anything private, or sent in a message, writes no activity at all.

THE MOVE

How an rtMedia library moves across, with rtMedia still installed

The importer reads rtMedia's table and your WordPress attachments, then writes to MediaVerse's own tables. It does not delete rtMedia data.

  1. Back up the site

Take a full database and files backup with your host or backup plugin before any import.

  2. Install MediaVerse and Pro

Activate the free plugin and Pro next to rtMedia. Both need WordPress 6.5+ and PHP 7.4+.

  3. Preview with a dry run

Run wp mvs import-rtmedia --dry-run, or use the dry run on the Import Migration screen. Nothing is written.

  4. Run the import

Start it from Import Migration or WP-CLI. It runs in batches of 50 by default, and --offset resumes a stopped run.

  5. Check profiles, groups and activity

Open a few member profiles, group media tabs and old activity posts. Running the import again skips items already moved.

  6. Deactivate rtMedia

When the media matches, deactivate rtMedia. Keep its tables until you are sure you no longer need them.

BuddyPress media is free. The rtMedia importer is Pro.

Questions from BuddyPress site owners

Is the BuddyPress integration free?
Yes. Activity uploads, profile and group media tabs, BuddyPress notifications and privacy all ship in the free plugin. Pro adds importers, extra layouts, competitions, cloud storage and the document drive.
Do I need BuddyPress to use it?
No. MediaVerse runs on its own with profiles, an explore feed and messages. The BuddyPress features switch on when BuddyPress is active.
Is rtMedia still maintained?
Yes. rtMedia 4.7.13 was released on WordPress.org on August 27, 2026, per its listing read on September 17, 2026. Moving is a choice about features, not a rescue.
What does the rtMedia importer bring across?
Photo, video and music files, each item's uploader, albums, privacy, group media and likes. The WP-CLI import also carries comments. Old rtMedia activity posts are pointed at the new media.
Can I preview the import without changing anything?
Yes. Run wp mvs import-rtmedia --dry-run, or use the dry run on the Import Migration screen. It reports what would move and writes nothing.
What happens to my rtMedia data?
The importer reads rtMedia and writes to MediaVerse's own tables. It does not delete rtMedia's table or your attachment files. The Import Migration screen does update old activity posts so they show the new media.
How many files can a member attach to one activity post?
Six by default. Developers can raise or lower the limit with the mvs_activity_max_media filter.
Will it fit my BuddyPress theme?
The Media and Albums tabs render inside BuddyPress profile and group navigation. When you need different markup, override the MediaVerse templates from your theme.
