BBPRESS ALTERNATIVE

bbPress was great in 2013. Your community deserves better now.

bbPress was built for a smaller, simpler web. As your community grows, pages slow down, spam gets ahead of you, and you keep wishing it had Q&A, voting, or even basic trust levels. Jetonomy replaces bbPress with a forum that stays fast at any size, moderates itself, and includes everything bbPress is missing. One-click import from bbPress.

  1. Stays fast at 100k topics Where bbPress slows past a few thousand topics, Jetonomy stays snappy. DB built for discussions, not posts.
  2. Auto-moderation via trust levels New members rate-limited. Earn reputation → unlock abilities. By Trust Level 4, the community moderates itself.
  3. Q&A + ideas + voting native Accepted answers, idea boards, upvote/downvote, reputation, leaderboard. Built into the core, not bolt-ons.

The problem

bbPress stopped evolving.
Your community did not.

  1. Pages get slow as the community grows

bbPress stores forum content the same way WordPress stores blog posts. That works for 500 topics. By 50,000 it's painful — page loads that used to take 200ms now take 2+ seconds, and there's no fix without rebuilding.

  2. Zero moderation automation

bbPress has no trust levels, no reputation system, and no behavior gates. Every new member has the same permissions as a 5-year veteran. You either manually moderate every post or open the floodgates to spam.

  3. No Q&A, no ideas, no voting

bbPress only does flat threaded discussions. There is no accepted answer feature, no idea voting, no polls, no upvotes. If you need these, you are bolting on 3-4 additional plugins that may or may not work together.

  4. You're already paying for plugins that should be built in

bbPress only does flat threads. If you want Q&A, voting, ideas, or polls, you're maintaining 3-4 extra plugins that may not work together or update on the same schedule.

Jetonomy is what bbPress should have become — modern architecture and every feature bbPress is missing.

The only plugin of its kind

Everything bbPress is missing - in a single free plugin.

Jetonomy was not built to iterate on bbPress. It was built to replace it. Three architectural decisions separate Jetonomy from every forum plugin that came before it.

01

Built to stay fast as your community grows

Where bbPress slows down past a few thousand topics, Jetonomy stays snappy at 100,000+. The database underneath is built for discussions, not blog posts — so reply counts, sort orders, and search all stay instant.

02

Trust levels that eliminate manual moderation

New members start rate-limited at 3 posts per day with no link permissions. As they contribute, they earn reputation and unlock abilities. By Trust Level 3, they can edit other members' posts. By Trust Level 4, they moderate the community. You set thresholds once - the system runs without you.

03

Q&A, ideas, and voting built into the core

Q&A spaces with accepted answers, idea boards with status tracking, upvoting and downvoting, reputation scoring, and a public leaderboard. Not plugins-on-top-of-a-plugin. Native features with native UI.

Migrate from bbPress to Jetonomy in 3 steps

1
Install Jetonomy alongside bbPress
Activate Jetonomy on the same site where bbPress is running. Both plugins coexist safely. Jetonomy uses its own database tables and URL paths - nothing conflicts.
2
Run the bbPress importer with dry-run
The importer auto-detects your bbPress installation and shows exactly what will be migrated - forums, topics, replies, and user mappings. Run a dry-run first that previews everything without touching data. When you are ready, import with live progress tracking.
3
Deactivate bbPress and go live
Once the import is verified, deactivate bbPress. Jetonomy is now serving your community with the same content, better performance, and every feature bbPress was missing. Set up redirects for old bbPress URLs if needed.

Who it's for

bbPress site owners hitting performance walls
Jetonomy stays fast at 10,000 topics or 100,000. No more watching page load times climb as your community grows.
Admins drowning in manual moderation
Trust levels automate what you do by hand today. New members are rate-limited automatically. Veteran members earn moderation abilities. Your daily review queue shrinks every month.
Communities that need more than flat discussions
Q&A spaces with accepted answers, idea boards with voting, and reputation scoring give your community structure that bbPress cannot offer without a stack of third-party add-ons.
Developers who need an API to build on
61+ REST API endpoints with cursor pagination and JSON schema validation. Build mobile apps, Slack integrations, or custom dashboards on top of your community data.
Theme designers tired of bbPress CSS battles
Jetonomy adopts your theme's colors and typography automatically — no custom CSS, no specificity battles. It just looks like it belongs.
Support teams using forums for customer help
Q&A mode with accepted answers turns repetitive support questions into a searchable knowledge base. Customers find answers before submitting tickets.

bbPress is a lightweight forum from 2011. Jetonomy is a complete community platform for 2025. The bbPress importer with dry-run and resume makes switching safe - preview what changes before committing.

bbPress importer

Migrate your entire bbPress community with zero data loss

The built-in bbPress importer reads your existing forums, topics, replies, and user associations directly from the database. It maps bbPress forums to Jetonomy spaces, preserves reply threading, and maintains user attribution. Dry-run mode lets you preview the full migration before committing a single row.

Automatic detection and mapping
The importer finds your bbPress installation, counts forums, topics, and replies, and shows a mapping preview. You see exactly what moves where before anything changes.
Dry-run mode for safe preview
Run a complete simulated import that logs every action without writing data. Review the log, confirm the mapping, then run the real import with confidence.
Resume on failure with progress tracking
Large communities import in batches with live progress. If the process is interrupted - server timeout, network drop - it resumes from the last successful batch. No record limit.
Single topic with threaded replies, trust badges, and voting

After migration - your bbPress topics now have trust level badges, voting, and threaded replies

Everything your community needs

No extensions to buy. No integrations to configure. It ships with all of this.

Stays fast as your community scales

Jetonomy stays snappy at 100,000+ topics and replies. Reply counts, sort orders, and search results stay instant — page loads don't creep up as your community grows.

Trust levels that bbPress never had

6 tiers of automatic member progression. New accounts are rate-limited and link-blocked. Experienced members earn editing and moderation abilities. Configure thresholds once, then let the system run.

Q&A mode with accepted answers

Create spaces where questions get definitive answers. Topic authors or moderators mark the best reply as accepted. Accepted answers appear at the top with Q&A markup that Google understands.

Idea boards with voting and status tracking

Members submit and vote on feature ideas. Admins move them through Open, Planned, In Progress, and Done. The roadmap view reduces support requests about upcoming features.

Built-in bbPress importer with dry-run

Auto-detects your bbPress data, maps forums to spaces, and imports topics and replies with user attribution. Dry-run previews everything. Live progress with resume on failure.

Real-time interactions without page reloads

Voting, replies, content sorting, and new-reply alerts update instantly without a refresh — so conversations feel alive.

Emoji reactions on posts and replies

Members react with a tap. Posts collect 'love', 'insightful', and 'funny' counts without a wall of 'thanks' replies cluttering the thread.

Private messaging between members

One-on-one and group DMs with real-time delivery and read receipts. Members keep the conversation on your site instead of trading emails outside it.

Community analytics that show what's working

See daily active members, which spaces are growing, who your top contributors are, and where engagement is stalling. Exportable to CSV.

Reputation system with public leaderboard

+10 per upvoted post, +15 per accepted answer, -20 for spam. Reputation reflects real contribution quality. The leaderboard highlights your top community members.

Per-space roles that bbPress never had

A member can moderate the Support space while being a regular member in General Discussion — granularity bbPress never offered.

Modern API for apps and integrations

Build mobile apps, Slack bots, custom dashboards, or headless frontends on top of your community. 61+ REST endpoints cover every feature.

Fast full-text search that scales with you

Members find answers quickly with results grouped by posts, spaces, and tags. Built to handle communities of any size.

Notifications, subscriptions, and email alerts

In-app notification bell, email notifications for replies and mentions, per-topic and per-space subscriptions. Members control their notification preferences.

A complete platform, not a simple widget

Community home - what your bbPress forum looks like after migrating to Jetonomy

Topics now have threaded replies, upvoting, trust level badges, and accepted answer marking

Q&A mode - a feature bbPress never offered, now available free in Jetonomy

Leaderboard - reputation, trust levels, and member engagement visible at a glance

Member profiles with reputation scores, trust level badges, and contribution history

What teams say after switching from bbPress to Jetonomy

We had about 18,000 topics in bbPress and page loads were creeping past 3 seconds on busy days. Three months after switching to Jetonomy on the same hosting, pages are back under a second. The dry-run import is what got us over the line — we could see exactly what would move before committing.

Marcus Brennan

Community Manager, MakerHub Forums

Seven years of bbPress history and a community that would notice if anything went wrong. The dry-run let me preview the whole migration, run it on staging first, and compare both versions side by side before going live. Cleanest migration I've done.

Daniel Okeke

Forum Administrator, ChessAcademy

Trust levels alone made this worth it. I used to spend the first hour of every morning clearing spam and approving new member posts. Now new accounts are rate-limited automatically and regulars earn moderation abilities on their own. The queue is finally manageable.

Tom Whitfield

Site Owner, RetroComputing Network

We needed Q&A with accepted answers. bbPress can't do it, and the add-on combinations we tried kept breaking each other after every WordPress update. Jetonomy had it built in. Our support ticket volume is noticeably down because customers find their own answers in the community now.

Priya Sharma

Head of Customer Success, Lendly

The analytics dashboard was a quiet win. I always assumed our General Discussion space was the most active. Turns out the Showcase space was — I just couldn't see it before. Restructured the homepage based on what the data showed and weekly engagement climbed.

Ashling Murphy

Community Lead, Pixelweave Studio

I rebuilt three client community sites on Jetonomy after fighting bbPress CSS for years. It just adopts whatever the theme is doing — no more chasing !important wars across child themes. Each site took me a couple of hours to skin instead of two days.

Common questions

How do I migrate from bbPress to Jetonomy?
Install Jetonomy alongside bbPress - both plugins coexist safely. Navigate to the bbPress importer in Jetonomy's admin, which auto-detects your forums, topics, and replies. Run a dry-run first to preview everything without touching data. When satisfied, run the real import with live progress tracking. The importer handles communities of any size with batch processing and resume on failure.
Will my bbPress topic URLs break after migration?
Jetonomy uses its own URL structure under /community/. Your old bbPress URLs will return 404 after deactivating bbPress. You can set up 301 redirects from bbPress URLs to Jetonomy URLs using a redirection plugin or .htaccess rules. The importer preserves original post IDs to make URL mapping straightforward.
Does the importer handle large bbPress communities?
Yes. The importer processes in batches with live progress tracking. If interrupted by a server timeout or network issue, it resumes from the last successful batch. There is no record limit. Communities with tens of thousands of topics and hundreds of thousands of replies import reliably.
Why is Jetonomy faster than bbPress?
bbPress was built when WordPress sites stayed small. It stores forum content the same way it stores blog posts, and that approach starts breaking down once you have tens of thousands of topics. Jetonomy uses a database structure designed specifically for forums — so the things that get slow in bbPress (reply counts, sort orders, big topic lists) stay fast. For developers: dedicated tables with proper indexes, pre-computed counters, cursor pagination, and optional Redis caching.
How much does Jetonomy cost?
Jetonomy has a free tier with forums, Q&A, ideas, voting, trust levels, moderation, search, notifications, and the bbPress importer — everything you need to migrate from bbPress and run a healthy community. Paid tiers add reactions, private messaging, polls, community analytics, and webhooks for growing communities. See pricing below.
Can I use bbPress shortcodes with Jetonomy?
No. Jetonomy uses its own template system and shortcodes. After migration, you will replace bbPress shortcodes with Jetonomy's community pages. The setup wizard creates the necessary pages automatically. If you had bbPress shortcodes in custom templates, those need updating.
Does Jetonomy support bbPress add-ons and extensions?
No. bbPress add-ons are built for bbPress's data structure and won't work with Jetonomy. The good news: most of what people use add-ons for — Q&A, voting, moderation tools, email notifications, REST API — is already built into Jetonomy, so you likely won't need them.
What happens to user subscriptions during migration?
The importer maps bbPress forum subscriptions to Jetonomy space subscriptions. Members who subscribed to a bbPress forum will be subscribed to the corresponding Jetonomy space after import. Topic-level subscriptions are also preserved where bbPress recorded them.
Can I run both bbPress and Jetonomy at the same time during transition?
Yes. Both plugins use separate database tables and separate URL paths. You can install Jetonomy, run the import, verify everything, and then deactivate bbPress when you are ready. There is no conflict during the overlap period.
What about bbPress GD bbPress Toolbox or other premium add-ons?
Premium bbPress add-on data (like GD bbPress Toolbox custom fields) is specific to those add-ons and will not transfer. The core data - forums, topics, replies, and user associations - migrates fully. If you relied on add-on features for Q&A or voting, Jetonomy includes those natively.

Your bbPress community deserves an upgrade. Jetonomy makes the switch safe and reversible.
